Richie Havens, 1941-2013
When Woodstock began on August 15th, 1969 and total chaos descended on Bethel, NY in the form of 500,000 hippies, getting any of the schedule bands and their equipment to the stage by helicopter seemed impossible. So Richie Havens, clutching his Guild acoustic guitar, stepped out on stage and performed every songs he knew, for three hours and then some, before improvising “Freedom” out of an old folk song. His performance gave way to the one of the most influential events in the history of music. Today, we remember a legend, and hope that his spirit and love of music lives on through all of us.
